Bye, Little Man

Our neighbors set their rental on fire a couple months ago. (They blame the wiring. I blame five people and three pets living in a two-bedroom house.) The fire made the place unlivable so they moved in with a cousin and took ONLY ONE OF THE PETS WITH THEM.
The two cats left behind stayed outside and the female lived practically on their porch. The male, however, moseyed over to ours and made hisself right at home. Thirteen-years-old, friendly as can be, and quite calm about our Little Bit getting bristly over her territory. So we added another food bowl, refereed the nip-ball fights, and enjoyed having an actual lap cat in the family.
After two months of abandonment and irregular feedings -- the family had left a food and water bowl on the porch, of which the local wildlife took great delight in participating -- they've finally returned today to claim their children. (The landlord put his foot down.) Little Man -- I don't care what they called him, he was old and thin as a rake and respectful, the name fit -- purred in my arms, didn't want to go to the lady, and balked at being put in the carrier.
I'm still bawling. Gonna miss that fellow.
